A 24-year-old Santa Maria man has been arrested in connection with the death of a boy at Pismo State Beach, the county Sheriff’s Department said in a written statement.
Juan Francisco Nunez was arrested Friday on suspicion of assault resulting in the death of a child. He was booked into County Jail where he was being held late Saturday on $1 million bail.
Rescuers tried to revive the 5-year-old boy Friday after he lost consciousness on the beach at about 5:15 p.m. Initial reports said he had been playing with family and friends.
The boy was taken by ambulance to Arroyo Grande Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead about 6:15 p.m, authorities said.
Nunez is the boyfriend of the boy’s mother, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
Sheriff’s officials did not release the boy’s name. The investigation into his death is continuing, authorities said.
