South County Beat: Motorcycles rally for families in need

The SLO LEAF Poker Run on July 19 had a successful turnout of 150 participants.

The nonprofit SLO LEAF, which provides financial relief to families of law enforcement officers in times of need, raised about $5,000 from the event, according to organizers.

The motorcycle ride commenced in Paso Robles and ended with a barbecue in Arroyo Grande.

Stride with the Tide

Pismo Beach’s Stride with the Tide 5K run will be held Aug. 9.

The race starts at the pier, goes south and then circles back with the finish line at the pier. There will be awards for 10 different age groups, including children and adults.

To register, visit www.pismobeach.org, go to City Hall at 760 Mattie Road or sign up on the north side of the pier the day of the event.

The event begins at 9 a. m. and costs $15 with a T-shirt or $12 without.

Help for cancer center

In an effort to support the new cancer center at Arroyo Grande Community Hospital, the Kiwanis Club of greater Pismo Beach recently donated $25,000.

Members of the club presented the check to Rick Castro, the hospital’s president and Montisa Phelan Lopez, the executive director of the hospital’s foundation.

“We’re inviting all local service clubs to match our donation, said Kiwanis Club President Chuck Bowles.

The hospital has raised $1.4 million of the $1.5 million it sought for the newly-opened cancer center, said Lopez.

Bowles hopes other local organizations will help it raise the $100,000 still needed.

Harvest Fest upcoming

It’s time to start planting fruits and vegetables, for those that would like to participate in the 71st Arroyo

Grande Valley Harvest Festival, according to organizer Vivian Krug.

The two-day festival will run Sept. 27 and 28.

This year’s theme is “Planting the Seeds of our Future.”

The festival will kick off with the annual best fruit, vegetable and flower contest.

Festivities also include a parade, live bands, food booths and performances from local bands.

Church beautifies A. G.

St. John’s Lutheran Church in Arroyo Grande was recently awarded the August Beautification for its Resurrection Garden.

The award was given because the church went above and beyond with its exterior improvements and maintenance.
