The collective light of professional graphic designers in San Luis Obispo just became dimmer with the sad passing of Rob Sexton on June 7.
Rob was one of the first creative people I met after moving here 25 years ago to work for Tintype Graphic Arts. Few designers could compare with his style, professionalism and gentle grace. He was truly “old school” and knew the meaning of picas and points, hot wax and X-acto knives.
His was an art developed when computer WYSIWYG was, well, who knew that was, and one actually had to thumbnail sketch a piece of mechanical work and mark up type specs so others could understand his concise professional design.
Rob’s life was about something other that his creative work, and we and his family have truly lost a Renaissance man. For all of us, life is truly getting shorter, and recognizing the creative good in Rob, and all of us, becomes more urgent.
Thank you, Rob, for leaving the finest of subtle marks on your clients, community and the consciousness of this student of the creative process. I truly regret not taking you up on your offer for lunch — I could have learned so much.
