By By BOB DOWNING -- RICHWOOD, W.Va. - A high-altitude wetland is one of the big attractions in the Allegheny Mountains of south-central West Virginia.
The 750-acre Cranberry Glades Botanical Area with its wooden boardwalk lies 21 miles east of Richwood in the sprawling 919,000-acre Monongahela National Forest.
The U.S. Forest Services operates Cranberry Mountain Nature Center at the edge of the famed wetland.

By By GARY A. WARNER -- Part of the romance of rail travel are the "name trains," the special service lines that went beyond the "3:10 to Yuma" banality of local trains.
Most of the great service has died off since Amtrak took over the passenger rail service.
There's no longer a competition between the Broadway Limited and the 20th Century Limited to see who could get passengers from New York to Chicago the fastest.

By By GARY A. WARNER -- I'm heading east on one of the most storied trains in America. The Sunset Limited, a name more than a century old. Out of Los Angeles and into the desert, toward Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.
The sun is low on the western horizon as we rumble and shudder east. We've been on the rails for three hours and are in ... Palm Springs.
"It takes 90 minutes to drive here from my house," grumps a lady in the dining car.

By By MARY BETH BRECKENRIDGE -- Diane Rodhe doesn't refer to the work that's been done on her 19th-century home as a renovation. It's more like an uncovering.
"I like to tell people the house gave us everything we needed," Rodhe said. Peeling away the updates revealed all the original elements that give the house its character - the tongue-and-groove wall boards, the fir floors, the ax-marked posts with their original pegs.
Rodhe bought the gray shingled house in June 2006 and spent more than a year revealing its classic bones. She's still working on the exterior, but she's sharing her progress with the public. The house is a stop on the Christmas Walk, a home tour in the Garrettsville area that started last week.

By By ELLEN CREAGER -- DETROIT - Michigan skiers have gloved fingers crossed.
They want a repeat of last winter's weather.
"Last year the atmosphere was so great," says Jami Morris, 21, of Grosse Pointe, whose family has a house in Harbor Springs near Nub's Nob. "It was amazing. It was powder."

By By ELLEN CREAGER -- Presidential tourism is as old as George Washington and as enduring as Grant's Tomb. Why? Because whether we love the leader of the free world or despise him as a know-nothing, two-faced, dirty lowdown scoundrel, once he's gone, or dead, our curiosity outweighs our harsh judgments.
That's when we start wondering, gee, where was he born? Where did he vacation? Where did he die? In honor of the just-concluded election, here are three of my all-time favorite presidential history spots, chosen because of their charm and the stories behind them.
JACKSON'S PRIDE AND JOY

By By JOHN BORDSEN -- What's it like to live in a far-off place most of us see only on a vacation? Foreign Correspondence is an interview with someone who lives in a spot you may want to visit.
Willie Karidis, 50, is executive director of the Denali Education Center, on the border of Alaska's Denali National Park. The Milwaukee native has lived in Alaska since 1981. Last Jan. 21 through March 21, he lived out in Denali alone to find common connections shared with the wilderness.
Q. Why in the world did you live 61 days out in the snow?

The longest sailing trip Dylan Gill-Vallance has ever taken was from Los Angeles to Morro Bay.
Soon he and a friend will embark on a 6,000-mile journey to Australia, far exceeding their time or experience at sea - combined.
The 34-foot blue and white sail boat, moored in Morro Bay, is almost ready for the voyage, and the men will slip away as soon as the weather is right.
